The Sounds of Silence

This evening I went to meet a friend in town. He messaged to say that he was stuck in traffic and running 10 mins late. No dramas. I sat down and got us both a beer.

I ended up waiting for 50 mins.

During that time, I shared my location with him, put my phone on silent and then into my pocket.

I sat and watched the world go by around me. Alone with my thoughts, I realised that I hadn’t been on my own like this for quite a while.

I enjoyed the experience. Normally I would say if someone hasn’t arrived in 20 mins,

I’m leaving. But this evening I genuinely enjoyed my own company.

No books, no podcasts, no phone, no distractions.
