Many would see leaving a steady job, 14 years of career congruence and 20% tax in the tropics to return to the UK during the depths of winter with a newborn for a ‘new career’ as madness, not least myself 18 months ago, but we decided that it was time to pin our flag to the mast.
The BritishArmy taught me that a bold 80% solution on time beats a 100% solution late. This aligns with the Veritas High Performance core tenets of ambition, bravery, curiosity and determination because when you live in alignment with these traits, it is almost impossible to stagnate.
Prospect theory suggests that when considering personal risks, we over-value potential losses compared to to the equivalent gains which can SIGNIFICANTLY skew the calculus towards risk-aversion.
For anyone out there who has a dream but isn’t actively taking the steps forward to make it happen, I can assure you that there is no ‘perfect time’.
Confirmation bias will reinforce the cognitive distortions already present in prospect theory, decreasing rational decision-making pinning you down and keeping you where you are.
So what????
If you are dreaming of change and of being in a new walk of life, acknowledge that to get there you need to regain the locus of control. Understand that what got you to where you are will not necessarily get you to the next checkpoint and ruthlessly prioritise working out what will.
Good luck….
